What is a Skin Tag, and Why Remove It?

Skin tags are small, soft growths that are skin-coloured. They tend to look slightly darker than surrounding skin in the affected area, and often appear to dangle from the skin surface. They range in size from around 2mm to 5cm, and you may get one or a cluster of them.

Skin tags are generally harmless, and their cause is typically associated with conditions that cause skin to rub against skin. Common known causes of skin tags are obesity, which causes skin folds to rub together, hormonal changes during pregnancy, and insulin resistance in people with type 2 diabetes.

Common places on the body where skin tags can develop include:

  • on the neck
  • under arms
  • on eyelids
  • under the breasts
  • around the buttocks

Medical professionals advise individuals to see a doctor if a skin tag suddenly gets bigger, becomes painful, begins to bleed, or develops from one skin tag into many skin tags.

Removing skin tags can help alleviate any discomfort or irritation that the growth is causing. When skin tags have developed in an area that makes an individual self-conscious, skin tag treatment can reduce unease and give peace of mind.

What to Expect from the Skin Tag Removal Process

Step One: Consultation

Your first visit to our Harley Street clinic allows us to assess your condition, understand its impact, and discuss your reasons for seeking skin tag removal. During the consultation, we’ll also rule out the possibility of a wart rather than a skin tag, as wart removal methods differ from skin tag removal. We’ll explain the available treatment options and recommend the most effective approach for you.

Step Two: Treatment

Once you’ve chosen a treatment method, you can proceed the same day or schedule it for another convenient time. Your skin specialist will outline the process clearly, ensuring you feel informed and comfortable before starting.

After the procedure, you’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions to promote healing and achieve the best results.

Step Three: Aftercare

Recovery is usually quick, and most people can return to normal activities right away.
You may experience mild soreness or redness for a few days – our team will provide guidance to ease discomfort and support healing.

Keep the area clean, watch for signs of infection, and follow the personalised aftercare plan we provide. Our team remains available for any further support.

Medical Skin Tag Removal Methods

Our highly esteemed consultant plastic surgeons carry out a range of skin tag treatment types at the London Skin Clinic.

The type of skin tag removal treatment that we offer you will depend on both the location of the skin tag and your personal preference. All available options will be clearly explained during your private consultation.

Here are the skin tag removal methods we use:

Cryogenic Skin Tag Removal

Electrosurgery

Surgical Excision

Laser Skin Tag Removal

Cryogenic Skin Tag Removal

Cryogenic skin tag removal is a relatively quick procedure. The procedure is considered minimally invasive and relatively painless.

This form of skin tag treatment involves freezing the skin tag with the use of liquid nitrogen, which causes it to die and fall off.

This method is quick and effective, though you may need more than one session for larger skin tags and groups of skin tags.

Electrosurgery

Electrosurgery is another highly effective skin tag treatment option that requires minimal downtime.

This method involves burning off the skin tag using an advanced electrical current apparatus.

Again, just like with our surgical excision skin tag treatment, patients are given a local anaesthetic to avoid any pain or discomfort during the procedure.

Surgical Excision

Surgical skin tag removal is effective for larger or multiple skin tags.

This form of skin tag removal treatment consists of having the affected area numbed with a local anaesthetic to prevent any pain for the patient. The skin surgeon then cuts the skin tag off using a scalpel.

Stitches are sometimes required to help with healing, but recovery time is typically short and scarring tends to be minimal.

Laser Skin Tag Removal

Our laser skin tag removal option entails using a small laser beam to destroy the skin tag from the inside through thermolysis (vaporisation).

This procedure stimulates the production of new collagen, which helps to speed up skin healing and rejuvenates the skin surface.

Like some of our other methods, this treatment involves minimal downtime and our surgeons use local anaesthetic to ensure patient comfort during the process.

Skin Tag Removal FAQs

Common Questions About Skin Tag Removal

When should a skin tag be removed?

Skin tags are usually removed for cosmetic reasons, but there are other scenarios where removal may be necessary:

  1. Irritation or Discomfort: If a skin tag is irritated by clothing, jewellery, or frequent rubbing, it may be best to have it removed.
  2. Cosmetic Reasons: Some individuals choose to have skin tags removed if they are in visible areas and affect their appearance.
  3. Bleeding or Infection: If a skin tag is repeatedly traumatized, it may become infected or start bleeding, making removal advisable.
  4. Uncertainty: If there is any doubt about whether the growth is a skin tag or something more serious, a doctor may recommend removal and biopsy.

When should I see a doctor about my skin tag?

You should consider seeing a doctor about your skin tag if:

  • The skin tag becomes painful, irritated, or starts to bleed.
  • It changes in colour, size, or shape.
  • You are unsure if the growth is a skin tag or something else.
  • The skin tag is in a location that causes discomfort or cosmetic concern.

Are skin tags dangerous?

Skin tags are generally harmless and are not cancerous. They are typically painless and do not cause any symptoms unless they are irritated by rubbing against clothing or jewellery. However, they can be unsightly or annoying, particularly if they are located in a visible or sensitive area.

Why do people develop skin tags?

The exact cause of skin tags is not entirely understood, but several factors may contribute:

  • Friction: Skin tags commonly form in areas where skin repeatedly rubs against skin, clothing, or jewellery.
  • Genetics: There may be a genetic influence, as skin tags often appear in multiple family members.
  • Age: They tend to be more prevalent in middle-aged and older adults.
  • Obesity: People who are overweight or obese have a higher likelihood of developing skin tags because of increased skin friction.
  • Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those experienced during pregnancy, can increase the frequency of skin tags.

Our private practice is run by two highly accredited consultant plastic surgeons, who both have vast experience performing a range of skin treatments and surgeries.
