What is a Cyst, and Why Remove It?

Skin cysts are fluid, oil or keratin filled, round lumps that appear just underneath the skin. They are usually harmless, but it is advised that you get any unexplained or concerning lump assessed by a professional for clarity and peace of mind.

If, after assessment, a cyst is infected or malignant, removal is essential. Should this be the case, rest assured that our skin health specialists provide guidance and support at every stage of treatment.

At London Skin Clinic, we believe that, even if a cyst is not cancerous or causing pain, patients should have the option to have a cyst removed for aesthetic reasons.

Under the NHS, cyst removal is typically only offered when a cyst is above a certain size, is causing consistent pain, is infected, or is cancerous. Many patients opt for private cyst removal as it allows them to have a cyst removed whilst it is small, to avoid it getting bigger and causing them more discomfort later on.

We understand that it can be a huge knock to someone’s self-esteem if a cyst is located in an awkward or embarrassing area, such as on the face or around the vagina. That is why private cyst removal is incredibly beneficial. We pride ourselves on offering professional, safe and discreet removal treatment that is dealt with confidentially, and offers excellent results.

Medical Cyst Removal Methods

The location of a cyst, and whether it is cancerous or infected, can determine which cyst removal method is best suited.

Our experienced and highly esteemed skin surgeons review your condition and treat every patient individually. You will be presented with all of your available treatment options, and clarification and support are provided every step of the way.

Cyst removal methods used at London Skin Clinic include:

Surgical Excision

Aspiration with drainage

Surgical Excision

This method of cyst removal is the most common method of treatment we carry out at the clinic.

Surgical excision is deemed the most effective form of cyst removal, as it involves removing the wall of the cyst and guarantees that the cyst is fully eliminated. This form of treatment prevents any recurrence of the issue.

This method involves the skin specialist making a small, minor incision to cut the cyst out. The procedure is carried out using a local anaesthetic to prevent any pain.

Aspiration with drainage

Aspiration with drainage is a cyst removal method that is suitable for cysts that have formed in joints

This cyst removal approach involves draining the fluid from the cyst using a small needle. Again, like with surgical excision, this treatment is aided by numbing the area before treatment is carried out, to reduce discomfort.

What to Expect from Cyst Removal Treatment

Step One: Pre-treatment Cyst Removal Assessment

You will book and attend a discovery consultation, where we will review your cyst, fully explain all your options, and agree with you on which treatment is best for your situation.

You will be seen at our clinic located at 101 Harley Street by one of our consultant plastic surgeons, either Mr. Onur Gilleard or Mr. Reza Alamouti. During the consultation, they will assess your cyst by asking questions about it, reviewing your general health, and performing a physical examination.

Step Two: Cyst Removal Procedure

On your appointment date, you will receive the exclusive attention of one of our skin surgeons, and the whole process will be completely private. The surgeon will talk you through the treatment before they carry out any work, so you are completely aware of what to expect during the procedure.

Local anaesthetic will be administered to reduce discomfort during treatment, and your dedicated skin specialist will provide you with aftercare advice and post-treatment informational documents.

Step 3: Aftercare and Post-Treatment Support

Although the majority of cyst treatments that we provide leave minimal scarring or require a small amount of stitches, we ensure you leave the clinic best equipped to recover properly. Our team will issue you with clear aftercare  tips to help you recover as fast and as effectively as possible.

Should you have any concerns during recovery or wish to speak with your surgeon, the team will be available to take your call to provide advice and support.

Our private practice is run by two highly accredited consultant plastic surgeons who both have vast experience performing cyst removal treatment.

Both of London Skin Clinic’s surgeons have worked for the NHS and privately, and both of them are on the General Medical Council specialist register. You can rest assured that your treatment will be administered by highly trained, skilled specialists who are experts in their field of clinical care.
