The Genital Wart Removal Procedure
1. Application of Local Anaesthetic
- Numbing Cream: The first step involves your surgeon applying a local anaesthetic numbing cream to the affected area. This cream helps to numb the skin, ensuring that you remain comfortable throughout the procedure.
- Local Anaesthetic Injection: After the numbing cream has taken effect, a local anaesthetic injection is administered. This further numbs the area, allowing for a painless removal process.
2. Wart Removal
- Excision with a Scalpel: Once the area is completely numb, the wart is carefully cut out using a scalpel. The procedure typically takes about 20 minutes to complete. The goal is to remove the wart entirely while minimizing any damage to the surrounding skin. No sutures are used. Instead, the base of the wound is cauterized.
3. Post-Removal Care
- Application of Ointment: Your surgeon will apply some chloramphenicol antibiotic ointment to the area. He will give you a fresh tube of this to apply twice a day for one week.
- Over-the-counter paracetamol and ibuprofen should be taken for the first 2-3 days after the procedure.
Aftercare: Ensuring a Smooth Recovery
Proper aftercare is crucial to ensure a smooth recovery and to minimize the risk of complications. Here’s what you need to do after your genital wart removal procedure:
- Shower: You can shower 24 hours after your procedure. Be gentle when cleaning the area, and avoid scrubbing the wound.
- Apply Ointment: Apply the chloramphenicol ointment once in the morning and once in the evening to the treated area. This will continue to protect the wound as it heals.
- Pain Medication: Take over-the-counter paracetamol and ibuprofen for 2-3 days after the procedure.
- Refrain from Physical Activity: To ensure proper healing, it’s recommended to avoid physical activity for five days. This prevents unnecessary strain on the treated area.
- Avoid Sexual Activity: It’s also advisable to refrain from sexual activity for five days to allow the area to heal completely.
