The Repair, Step by Step
Repair is a minor surgical procedure under local anaesthetic. The lobe is numbed with a small injection, the surgeon removes the healed skin lining the split (intact skin will not knit together), and the lobe is closed in layers to rebuild a smooth lower edge. A completely torn-through lobe usually has a small Z-plasty to recreate the rim and avoid a notch; a partial tear is closed in a straight line; and a wide gauged hole needs a wedge excision or local flap. Recovery and Re-piercing
Recovery is quick. Most people return to work and normal activities straight away, with mild tenderness for a day or two that simple pain relief handles. Keep the area clean and dry and avoid pressure on the ear for the first 48 hours. Outer stitches come out at a quick follow-up at about two weeks.
